The brain hears the words, interprets them automatically and is repeatedly drawn into a conversation it was never invited to join. The louder the speech, the louder the sound masking signal.

 

The objective is to reduce the contrast between speech and the existing acoustic background.

 

If you’re working in an extremely quiet office, a conversation fifteen metres away can remain surprisingly clear because very little background sound competes with it. Add a controlled masking signal and the words become harder to distinguish at distance, even though the speakers themselves have changed nothing.

A later study by Annu Haapakangas and colleagues physically created different acoustic conditions within an 84 m² open-plan office laboratory. Their work showed that speech distraction depends strongly on room acoustic design, including absorption, workstation screening and masking sound.

 

The lesson is surprisingly subtle. An office can become acoustically too exposed when background sound falls very low, because every conversation travels into attention with exceptional clarity.

How Loud Should Sound Masking Be

Sound masking works through careful calibration rather than sheer volume.

 

The US General Services Administration’s workplace criteria specify electronic masking levels around 45 to 48 dBA in open-plan offices and approximately 40 to 42 dBA in certain private-office applications.

Those figures illustrate the narrow operating window. A system set too low may provide little benefit. A system set too high can become another source of annoyance.
